AI product photography in India: what it can do now, what it still cannot, and what to expect

AI-generated product images have improved significantly in the last two years. For Indian ecommerce sellers, this changes the economics of catalogue photography. Here is an honest assessment.

Two years ago, AI product photography tools existed but the output was visibly artificial. Products would have warped edges, unrealistic shadows, or subtle distortions that made the images unusable for any serious listing. Sellers who tried early tools came away unimpressed and stuck with studios.

The technology has changed substantially. In 2025, AI tools can generate white-background hero images, lifestyle placements, and infographic overlays that are difficult to distinguish from studio photography for most product categories. The use case for Indian sellers is now genuinely compelling.

What AI product photography is actually good at today

  • White background removal and replacement: clean, accurate edge detection for packaged goods, solid-coloured products, electronics, and most household items
  • Background generation: placing a product in a styled environment โ€” a kitchen counter, a wooden shelf, an outdoor setting โ€” without a physical shoot
  • Consistent image sets: generating 3โ€“5 image variations from one input image with consistent lighting and presentation
  • Infographic overlays: automatically adding feature callouts and dimension lines to a clean product photo
  • Batch processing: scaling across 50โ€“500 SKUs without proportional cost increase

What AI still struggles with

Jewellery and high-gloss products: reflective surfaces are extremely difficult for AI to handle convincingly. The subtle light play across a gold chain or the sparkle on a gemstone requires physical studio lighting to capture accurately. AI attempts at jewellery photography are improving but are not yet at parity with a specialist photographer.

Transparent and glass products: a clear bottle, a glass jar, anything transparent. The edges and the refraction inside the product are hard to detect cleanly. Background removal leaves artefacts and the regenerated images look off.

Fine fabric textures: a handloom saree, a premium woollen blanket, anything where the texture is the selling point. A photo cannot fully capture texture, and AI does not add anything here. A physical close-up shot by a human photographer is much more effective.

Products that need models: fashion in most categories, anything worn or carried. AI people generators have a specific look that experienced buyers will recognise. Human models are still significantly better for fashion photography where the person wearing the garment is half the product.

The economics for Indian sellers in 2025

For a seller with 30 SKUs across a category like kitchenware, personal care, or electronic accessories, AI tools like ProMugshot cost roughly โ‚น100โ€“โ‚น200 per product for a complete listing set. The same set from a studio is โ‚น1500โ€“โ‚น2500. At 30 products, that is a difference of โ‚น40,000โ€“โ‚น60,000 for the first catalogue shoot.

The reinvestment that is now possible: that โ‚น40,000 can fund Google Ads or Meta ads for a month, which has a measurable impact on sales. Studio photography is not a bad investment โ€” it is a capital allocation decision, and AI tools change what is possible with the same budget.

How to evaluate an AI product image tool

  • Upload your actual product, not a clean reference image. Any tool looks good on well-lit, isolated products. Test with the kind of photo you actually have
  • Check the edges: download the result and zoom in on the edges of the product against the white background. Fringing, blurring, or missing product sections are dealbreakers for marketplace listings
  • Check colour accuracy: the product colour in the AI output should match the real product. Saturation shifts or colour casts in the output will cause returns
  • Test with your hardest product: if you sell five categories, test the most complex one first

Practical tip

The right mental model for AI product photography is not "replace the photographer" โ€” it is "replace the studio for 80% of your SKUs so the photographer's time and budget goes to the 20% that genuinely needs it".
