How to remove background from product photos — free options, paid tools, and when AI is worth it
Every marketplace wants a white background main image. Here is every method to get there, from manual cutouts to AI background removal, with an honest take on when each is good enough.
Background removal is the single most common edit sellers need. The product was photographed on a table, a floor, a grey wall — whatever was nearby — and now you need it on white for Amazon. There are five main ways to do this. They vary significantly in time, quality, and cost.
Method 1: Shoot on white paper (best starting point)
The simplest fix is not removing the background at all — it is photographing on a white background in the first place. White foam board or poster paper from a stationery shop, curved into a sweep behind the product, and natural daylight from a window. This is not always possible for every product but it eliminates the problem entirely and produces a cleaner result than any digital background removal.
Method 2: Manual selection in Photoshop or GIMP (free, slow)
The Pen tool in Photoshop lets you draw a precise selection around the product edge and delete the background. Results are excellent for complex edges — fur, hair, transparent products. Time cost is 5–20 minutes per image depending on product complexity and your experience.
GIMP (free) has the same capability but the tools are less intuitive. For a seller who already knows Photoshop, manual selection is the highest-quality option for difficult products. For someone who has never used Photoshop, the learning curve makes it impractical for more than a handful of images.
Method 3: Remove.bg (automated, good for most products)
Remove.bg uses AI to automatically detect and cut out the product. It is fast (under 5 seconds), free for low-resolution output, and produces clean results for the majority of straightforward products — packaged goods, electronics, household items, clothing on a plain background.
Where it struggles: products with the same colour as the background, transparent products (glass, plastic bottles with clear windows), very fine edges like loose fabric or products with hair-like fibres, and products where the background is cluttered.
High-resolution output costs roughly ₹40–₹60 per image depending on the plan. For under 20 images per month this is entirely practical.
Method 4: Canva background remover (if you already use Canva)
Canva Pro includes a background remover that works with one click. Quality is similar to remove.bg. The advantage: if you are already in Canva editing your listing images, you can remove the background and then immediately add callouts or resize for different platforms without exporting and reimporting.
Method 5: AI product image tools (background removal + image generation)
Tools like ProMugshot go beyond simple background removal. They take your product photo, remove the background, and then generate a set of marketplace-ready images — white background hero, lifestyle placement, infographic. The distinction is that you are not just getting a cutout; you are getting a finished image set.
For sellers who need multiple image types per product, this is more efficient than removing the background in one tool and then rebuilding the images in another.
Which method for which situation
- 1–5 products, good source photos: remove.bg free tier, review each image manually
- 5–20 products monthly: remove.bg paid or Canva Pro if you already use it
- 20+ products or catalogue that changes: AI product tool — the per-image cost is lower and you get additional image types
- Jewellery, glass, transparent products: manual Photoshop selection; automated tools all struggle with these
- Fashion with complex edges (fur, fringe, knit): either manual selection or a specialist fashion photography editor
Practical tip
After automated background removal, always check the edges on a coloured background — not white. Switch the canvas to a bright red or green in Canva or Photoshop. Fringing and missed pixels that are invisible on white jump out immediately on a coloured background.
